The physical culture of martial arts (malla yuddha, mushti yuddha etc) is old and well known in India. The asanas were allegedly seen only from Hatha Yoga times and not recorded earlier. But the tradition of postures itself, the asana culture, is visible in an uninterrupted form. It is more in the line of “health culture” of the common Hindu’s life than martial culture and its best example is the Baudhayana’s arrangement of Surya Namaskaras (whose base mantras are visible in Aruna patha of Taittiriya).
